South and West 600K

This will be the first time we’ve run this event since 2019. It’s the standard format for a 600K: 400K on the first day with a 200K second day and combines the 400K “Scale the Mound” with the 200K “Nowhere but Norwalk” routes. Here are the details:

375.8 miles, 16,060 feet of climbing, ACP sanctioned
Day one 251.4 miles, 10,868 feet of climbing, route here
Day two 124.4 miles, 5,170 feet of climbing, route here

Ride notes for day one:

This route is identical to the Going for the Green 300K route all the way to Hazel Green so there should be ample opportunity to ride with others for the first part of the ride. Most of the climbing on the route is stacked toward the last two thirds of the ride so make sure you don’t burn too many matches early in the ride!

Refueling stops (usually controls) are well spaced along the route:

– Boscobel 29 miles
– Cassville 79 miles
– Hazel Green 119 miles
– Shullsburg 141 miles
– Belmont 160.5 miles
– Muscoda 200 miles
– Spring Green 228 miles

Note in particular the optional stop at Shullsburg. The stretch between Shullsburg and Belmont is tough, especially if it’s hot and/or there’s a North wind! Whether or not you stop is up to you but don’t underestimate this stretch (or overestimate your reserves!).

Again, opportunities for refueling are well spaced and usually at controls:

– Liberty 88.4 miles Liberty bar (control) – nice people who fill fill your bottles
